MANGAKAHU VALLEY 18 May 2024.    An easy 5Km walk on a formed track to the site of the old Nuffield Sawmill and a water supply dam. Transport cost $10. MATEMATEAONGA TRACK 30 May - 3 June.   Our club have been invited to join the Whanganui for this trip. The Whanganui contact person is Dorothy Symes.  With requests for repeat and some missing out last time, Dorothy is happy to revisit and lead again. It is a walk deep into the wilderness of the Whanganui National Park. The stay is 4 nights in DOC huts made relatively easy now by a recent track clearing project.   It follows an old Maori trail and settlers dray road, considered easy to moderate. Travel from Strathmore off the Stratford highway, East to West to the Whanganui River then Jet boating to Pipiriki and to pick up.  Cost last time was for Van to start, 4 huts, Jet boat to Pipiriki and van home. $180.00. Please contact the tramp leader no later than 7.30pm the day before the event so vehicles can be arranged. Recommended contribution for the cost of transport  is 15c/km to be paid to the driver. TONGARIRO RIVER WALK FROM TURANGI 15 June 2024.  We will follow the banks of the Tongariro River alongside rolling farmland, through native bush and urban areas and enjoy magnificent river views  on this well-formed undulating walking/cycling trail from Turangi . The 15km loop takes us past the Tongariro National Trout Centre, a great place to break the journey, with lovely picnic areas and facilities on site. CANCELLED DUE TO SCHOOL HOLIDAYS & WEATHER DEPENDENT FOR STREAM CROSSING.

TREE TRUNK GORGE TRACK, KAIMANWAS 13 July 2024.  A pleasant 10Km return tramp on well-formed track through mature broadleaf forest from the bridge over the gorge at the ‘Pillars of Hercules’ to the road bridge on Tree Trunk Road over the gorge.  There are a couple of stream crossings so wet feet are a possibility. TONGARIRO FOREST PARK 27th July.      Walk into the Tongariro Forest Park from Owhango.     The actual walk will depend on the weather and how far members want to go. There are several options; a walk on the 42 traverse, a tramp on one of the old logging tracks. Barry’s hut, 10 bunk hut, water supply dam or a waterfall. Options are easy to moderate grades. WAIRERE STREAM WALK 17 August 2024. This will be a 10Km return tramp from the Whakapapa Village to the Taranaki Falls and then following the Wairere Stream. AUCKLAND ANNIVERSARY WEKEND. 24, 25, 26, 27  January 2025.     The Whanganui Tramping Club will be hosting our club on some special walks over the holiday weekend.  The Whanganui Boys and Girls Gym club will be booked for our accommodation. It has very good with access to all facilities and showers. Very comfortable lounge rooms with TV etc. Bunks 4 people to a room at $30-00 per night per person . Refer the website  Group Accommodation - Whanganui Boys and Girls Gym Club (whanganuigymclub.co.nz) The programme:  Saturday: Manawatu Gorge lots going on there and mostly native bush. Huge windmill farm there and of course the huge new Highway linking to the Hawkes Bay.

Sunday: The Waitotara Valley north of Whanganui. We will go up to the Mangawhio Lake which dropped 8 metres in the 2015 storm. Will have a Special leader and Guide by one of the Whanganui members who was born and bred there . A beach somewhere. Monday Morning:  A beach walk and after lunch we will return home. As this weekend is the same weekend as the National Masters games - the accommodation needs to be booked ASAP.
